"HIEROGLYPHIC COLLAGES"

May 27 - June 21, 2008

Press release:

Amos Eno Gallery presents the artwork of Steven Travis in the exhibition "Hieroglyphic Collages" from May 27 to June 21, 2008. Four large computer graphic works depicting hieroglyphs are generously textured with collages of the artist's curious writing system and illustration.

Since childhood, Steven has been strongly attracted to manuscripts. The subject of this exhibit introduces his invented hieroglyphic language called Tapissary, to which he has devoted 30 years. On each wall of the gallery, one print of a hieroglyph hangs like a greatly oversized page. Similar to the embellished initials of a medieval parchment, Steven enjoys investing his symbols with detailed flourishes. He liberally sews the seeds of image and text within the silhouette of each of the four hieroglyphs until an energetic 'language-scape' is achieved. As we walk by the human scaled 'letters' in this fanciful version of manuscript, we are faced with an assortment of perspectives asking us to zoom in and debark. Each hieroglyph is geographically situated in the artist's mind. These are destinations, however improbable in the real world, and reveal a sort of codex of Steven's invention with language and art. The architectural passages are photographs of the artist's miniature villages that he constructed in clay, or drew on paper. The exclusively black and white body of work reminds us that the exhibit centers on language: the black and white of the printed page. He invites the viewer to travel from island to island in his proposed geography, as well as from word to word.

Steven Travis has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. His shows explore the theme of an invented culture.

Each of the four pictures contains one hieroglyph, or a hieroglyphic cluster. They read:

1)     Dear

2)     Diary

3)     You-and-I

4)     Speak-the-same-Language.
